Rain overnight and then a brightening day
There was heavy rain over night and a cloudy start; all as forecast. The fleet assembled at the club and some chose to preempt the race committee and hauled out their boats. However after their traditional lunch and with no breeze in sight the race committee set off in their craft and gave a hearty 3 toots as they headed out to the race course!
Cue a scramble from those with boats still afloat (now 27), and off we drifted in a ghost of a northerly wind to the start line, where the wind promptly dropped to nothing. So we waited for 90 minutes with some al fresco swimming (Charlie Apthorp) and sunbathing and then after 2pm the Ora came in from the south, not as strong as on previous days, but peaking at force 3. The race team treated us to one abandoned start and then after adjusting the line the fleet set off for the cliffs. However, not all transpired as planned with the boats who started down the line away from the Committee boat gaining the advantage over the "boat huggers". Ian Cadwallader had to gybe around to get a space by the committee boat end.
All seemed to be passing by without incident though the top two boats were not at the head of the leading pack. However after the second beat on the leg to the spacer mark before the reach, Hamish Mackay tempted Steve Goacher into an infringement requiring him to take a penalty and opening up a gap between the two overnight leaders. This proved to be sufficient to have them tied on points at the finish with Hamish taking the overall regatta honours on count back.
The final positions in race 10 were Jon Gorring/Steve Brown (GBR3922) in first with Greg Wells/Andrew Jameson (GBR4030) and Charles and Charlie Apthorp (GBR3957) behind them.
Overall regatta positions were Hamish Mackay/Andrew Lawson first, Steve Goacher/Tim Harper second and Greg Wells/Andrew Jameson third.

The Fraglia Vela Riva hosted an excellent event showing themselves to be better weather forecasters than many a website that attendees were following. The event was enjoyed by all who attended. There is interest in returning soon, maybe not as a Championship event, and at a time when families can come, so watch this space.
