Winter Warm-up Series 2003

Open Competition for the Andersen Trophy held on the four Sundays in February

Sunday February 2nd

Visitor numbers were reduced possibly due to severe snow conditions in parts of the SE. The Series began in cold, testing conditions with a force 4 to 5 prevailing. Olympic type courses were set with three laps in each race.

The Race Officer spoiled the fun by starting the race on time but the contest was quickly joined with David Sayce crewed by Tim Hammick in 3689 pulling out a convincing lead to finish first with Richard Hughes with Allen Atterbury in 3295 second, followed by Phil Owen and Peter McKenna in 2948.

The wind freshened for the second race and there were one or two retirements. Again the Sayce/Hammick duo lead the way; they were clearly going to be hard to beat in these conditions. Gerry Sheard with Howard Shawyer in 3711 came second and again Owen/McKenna in third.

Sunday February 9th

The breezes were light to start with and Richard Hughes with Alan Atterbury lead the fleet at one stage. But then the expected frontal shift came in with a vengeance, and the run became a beat thus advantaging those in the lead who were fairly near the new windward mark. Hughes/Atterbury lost their lead in the shift and again Sayce/Hammick got ahead and maintained their winning ways to the finish.

The shift had brought fresher breezes for the second race. David and Rosemary Harrop were first to the windward mark. Sheard/Shawyer got into the lead after the first triangle but then lost it on the next beat to you know who. Hughes/Atterbury pulled through to third spot.

Sunday February 16th

At this stage Hughes and Sheard were equal second and one or other had to win all the remaining races to put Sayce off the podium. But then Charles and David Apthorp turned up in 3271 to defend their title, so all bets were off. The first race got away in very shifty and variable conditions, Sayce/Hammick snatched the lead from the Apthorps right on the finish line.

The Apthorps got well away in the second race but Sayce kept in touch to finish second. In both races the main fleet found the conditions approaching the windward mark very testing indeed but Phil Owen and Peter McKenna managed a third in both races.

Sunday February 23rd

In a moderate force three breeze Richard Jones and Will Durston in 3644 were first to the windward mark and kept ahead until gradually they were reeled in by the Apthorps and then by Tim Hammick being helmed by Neville Herbert; Jones/Durston finished third.

The second race was recalled due to a veering shift as the front came in. The course was reset and then the wind dropped to about a force 2 for the start. The Apthorps were ahead round the first triangle but then made a rounding error and Sheard/Shawyer got into the lead ahead of Owen/McKenna; a close contest ensued with Sheard managing to hold on to the lead.

The MERCEDES BENZ Trophy

Again as last year, a very windy weekend. The prevailing wind was south-west force 5-6 with gusts over 30 knots throughout the event. Sadly the turnout was reduced and several of the home fleet decided to spectate. However those who ventured out had some thrilling racing round an Olympic type course. The first reach was rather shy and was two-sailed, but the second reach made up for it with some spectacular spinnaker reaching.

Again as last year Charles Apthorp crewed by David Ricards in 3271 got well ahead of the fleet from the first beat but David Sayce crewed by Tim Hammick in 3689 kept relentless pressure on the leaders and got ahead in race 3 to finish first. For most of the fleet these were extreme conditions and survival was the name of the game though Phil Barnard and Phil Carter-Haines from Bewl Valley SC managed third spot in all but the first race. Richard Jones crewed by Will Durston in 3644 was up with the leaders in race three only to go out with gear failure on the last lap.

With a one-race discard, the prizes were decided after the second race on the Sunday and no one seemed over-keen to sail the final race! Charles Apthorp and David Ricards were presented with the Mercedes Benz Trophy by Datchet's Principal Race Officer, Peter Short, and Gerry Sheard and Howard Shawyer received the Veuve de Verney Trophy as the first Datchet boat.

Bewl Valley Sailing Club

22nd and 23rd March

A total of 28 Flying Fifteens took part in the Bewl Valley FF Open Meeting over the weekend of the 22nd /23rd March. Unfortunately there were only 6 visitors which was a disappointing in view of attendances in previous years. The entry was therefore dominated by the 22 home boats which is an indication of the current strength of the class at Bewl.

The four race event was sailed in sunny conditions with a light south-easterly breeze. In race one a biased line resulted in congestion at the committee boat end but Colin Nutt emerged choosing the favoured right hand side of the course and rounded the windward mark first. He held the lead for the first lap with Pip Hudson in pursuit. Pip Hudson moved into the lead on the second lap and held this position to the finish with Charles Apthorp second.

For race two, starters at the port end of the line had the advantage with three home boats lead by Phil Barnard reaching the windward mark first. On the next two spinnaker legs the lead changed with Robert Hogben in front at the end of the first lap. On the second beat Pip Hudson broke through to hold the lead to the last beat. In a dying breeze, the first four boats sailed into a hole allowing Jonathan Hill to snatch first place followed by Rupert Mander and Pip Hudson.

For race three on Sunday morning there was a clean start with Colin Nutt in the lead for the first lap. Rupert Mander moved into the lead on lap two and finished ahead of Pip Hudson and Charles Apthorp.

With three boats having a chance of winning the event, the start of the fourth race was always going to be hotly contested. Following a general recall and the threat of being black flagged, the second start was successful and Charles Apthorp lead for the first lap followed by Phil Barnard and Pip Hudson. Charles Apthorp held on to win the race but position changes for second, third, and forth place were going to decide the final event winner. Eventually Pip Hudson moved into second place which he held to the line. This was enough to confirm him as the overall winner of the event by one point from Charles Apthorp and Rupert Mander.

The team prize was won by Bewl Valley with positions 4th to 7th.

FLYING FIFTEEN 2003 INLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS - GRAFHAM WATER SAILING CLUB

April 5th/6th

The 2003 Flying Fifteen Inlands at Grafham attracted fifty six entries, including three former and the current Class World Champions, and a number of the top UK teams starting to tune up for the Worlds in Ireland this year. Also included in the entry were thirteen Classic and Silver fleet teams racing within the main fleet. Expectations for an outstanding event were slightly tempered by a weather forecast of five mph for Saturday from no particular direction.

However……Saturday opened with 15 to 20 mph from the NNE making lee shore launching and recovery awkward but with lots of sunshine for a perfect sailing day. Race 1 got away on time under the Black Flag with former World Champion Steve Goacher quickly establishing a comfortable lead, followed by Neil Platt and another former World Champion Rupert Mander. These three finished in order with Alan Bax fourth and Charles Apthorp fifth on the water, however Platt was judged OCS, and Bax retired due to having no measurement documents for his absolutely brand new boat. This left Mander and Apthorp second and third respectively, while locals Nick Heath and Ted Legg won the Classics section followed by Graham Lamond and Scott Train sailing GBR 617 - a wooden boat that looked much too nice to put in the water!

Race two followed after a break ashore with local team Simon Kneller and Dave Lucas leading Tom Hall round, and with Dave McKee finishing third after a strong challenge from Peter and Sue Bannister who eventually finished fifth, with Neil Platt fourth. Jeremy Arnold won the classics from Nick Heath with locals David and Carole Duke in third.

Race three back to back saw Steve Goacher finish first, Jeremy Davy second and Alan Bax third, however both first and third were OCS leaving Davy the winner from Richard Estaugh with Brett Dingwall third. Arnold won the Classics again from Lamond and the Dukes to establish a clear leading position, while Brian Cambell-Bottoms/Adrian Simpson had a clear overnight lead of the Silver fleet.

A gloomy weather forecast was again confounded when Sunday brought another NNE steady 15 mph again, only this time without the sunshine. Overnight leader Jeremy Davy won race four after stiff competition from Neil Platt to put his mark on the event, with Estaugh in third, and Jeremy Arnold won the classics for the third time from Nick Heath to consolidate his Classic fleet position.

Races five and six both followed back to back with a race five general recall under black flag catching five of the top teams. This left Steve Goacher to win from Davy and Pip Hudson, while Dave and Carole Duke beat Jeremy Arnold in the Classics.

It looked as if Jeremy Davy had it sorted, but his race six win confirmed it in great style, while last year's event winners Justin Waples and Graham Wadeley from GWSC held off Pip Hudson for a race second and fourth overall. Steve Goacher's tenth confirmed him in second overall with an excellent fourth moved Simon Kneller/Dave Lucas to third overall. The Silvers were won convincingly by Brian Cambell-Bottoms/Adrian Simpson who finished 31st overall.

Congratulations to the winners of what proved to be a challenging event with consistently shifty conditions on both days, despite the good wind strengths, and which saw a number of top teams loose out through mixed results. Top marks also both to race officer Steve Carson who set excellent courses and kept a tight rein on the event to get in all six races, and to the shore team who launched and recovered a large fleet with a minimum of hassle.

Dovestone Sailing Club

26th - 27th April

In the Open Fleet David and Sally McKee had two good first places in the variable wind conditions on the Saturday of the weekend of 26/27th April. Graham Winterbottom and Barbara Miles took second in the first race but they didn't get away well in the second race, finishing third behind Andy Goddard and Colin Pierce. The wind increased steadily on the Sunday, with heavy gusts and squally showers.Neil Platt and Dale Knowles came for the day and took a first place from David and Sally McKee,but the Dovestone sailors still counted three firsts to win convincingly. Andy and Colin had the advantage of crew weight in the final race to lead Graham and Barbara over the line but just missed out on second place overall.

In the Classic Fleet Nick Heath and Ted Legg from Grafham Water S.C. steadily pulled away from the rest of the fleet to win all their races. John Washington and Simon Dangerfield from Notts County S.C. took second place in their beautiful wooden vintage boat while Mick and Theresa Hampson sailed very consistently to hold off the challenge David Naylor and Norman Christie for third place.

FLYING FIFTEEN 2003 Northern Championships - Royal Windermere Yacht Club

April 5th/6th

The Flying Fifteen Northern Championship  attracted an entry of over thirty boats, including a strong contingent from Irish clubs.

Two back to back races were scheduled for Saturday afternoon, and with a moderate south-westerly forecast the fleet sailed down to a start near the Ferry line in South lake.

For the first race, a port-hand Olympic course was set to a windward mark near the west shore and a wing mark near Storrs on the east shore.  In a steady, cold, Force 3 most of the fleet tacked out into the middle of the lake, and as the first group of boats converged on the windward mark  Steve Goacher and Phil Evans from Royal Windermere, in 3721, rounded narrowly in front of Justin Waples and Graham Wadley in Sparks and Sean Craig and Stephen Boyle in Whiskey in the Jar.  During the two close spinnaker legs back to Ferry the wind backed to southerly, and on the next beat boats took a variety of lines spread out across the full width of the lake to choose the best line into the windward mark.  3721 held on to the lead, while Rupert Mander and Chris Hewkins in Men Behaving Badly and Neil Platt and A. Gerrard in New Order joined the first group.  The wind dropped during the leg back to Ferry, only to come back strongly on the third lap, with the same boats in the first fleet, while further back boats were narrowly avoiding broaches after the windward mark.  On the final beat the wind had come further round to the south east, and most of the fleet kept close to the west shore on the way to the finish line at the windward mark, with  3721 holding off strong competition from Whiskey in the Jar to take first place, with Men Behaving Badly finishing third.

The second race, set as a port-hand trapezoidal course, had a slightly longer beat down the west shore, with the two other marks close to the east shore.  After a skilful start, once again 3721 was first round the windward mark, this time some way ahead of David McKee and Andy Farmer in Full Monty and Whiskey in the Jar.  After a good spinnaker reach over to Storrs the wind dropped on the run to the next mark, tempting some of the fleet to sail out into the centre of the lake.   Any advantage from this was short-lived as the wind came in again from the east, keeping spinnakers flying on the leg back across the lake.  Positions at the head of the fleet remained unchanged and 3721 built up a substantial lead as the wind veered to the south east, giving a succession of straight beats and spinnaker legs.  Full Monty held on to second place,  with  Whiskey in the Jar third.

With a fairly steady south to south-easterly wind, Sunday's races were set in North lake.   In the morning, under over-cast skies, a Force 3 - 4 gave the opportunity to set a longer port-hand trapezoidal course, with a beat down the west shore, a mark in the middle of the lake level with  Claife, and a fourth mark near Fisherfield on the east shore.  Before long, 3721 had set up a comfortable lead, with Men Behaving Badly and Bryan Willis and John McPeake in Re-finned Gold in the places.  The wind kept up in strength, shifting slightly to give three successive spinnaker legs on one lap.  Despite pressure from the rest of the leading group over a long race, positions remained unchanged, with Men Behaving Badly taking second and Re-finned Gold third.

The cloud lifted in the afternoon with brighter conditions and clearer skies, and a southerly Force 3 breeze.   The course was set as an Olympic Triangle and Sausage, with the beat as before set along the west shore, with a wing mark in the middle of the lake equidistant from the start and the windward mark. On the first beat, after a close start, the fleet divided as boats chose whether to keep to the shore line or tack out into the middle.   Nigel and Graham Tullett in Kiffs rounded the windward mark first, with Full Monty second and 3721 briefly back in third place.  Very soon 3721 had sailed back into the lead, with  Full Monty in pursuit. During the third beat the wind dropped and the fleet spread out over the whole course, with Sparks and New Order coming up to join the leaders.  As the fleet struggled round the windward mark to a slow-motion spinnaker run, the race officers signalled a course change to bring the northern mark closer down the lake.  As the breeze freshened again the leaders lapped some of the fleet on the short final sausage lap, before 3721 crossed the finish line in first place again, with Full Monty second and New Order third.

With four first places Steve Goacher and Phil Evans had won the championship, and Monday's final race was crucial to decide the places, with Full Monty and Whiskey in the Jar front runners before the start of the race.  Under dark clouds, with a south to south-westerly Force 2 - 3  breeze, a short, port-hand trapezoidal course was set in South lake.  As the wind freshened to Force 4 and gusting 5 the leaders lapped the second half of the fleet, as boat-handling tactics came to the fore.  New Order took the lead and held on for a well-deserved win, from Men Behaving Badly and Full Monty

Nine boats, sailing with the rest of the fleet, competed in the Classic Fleet.  Three boats were in contention, consistently sharing the lead.  The final race in particular produced very competitive, close sailing by these three, in the middle of the fleet, with a result which proved to be the championship order.

FLYING FIFTEEN 2003 Southern Championships - Parkstone Yacht Club

April 5th/6th

A steady southery force 5 provided testing conditions for the forty seven Flying Fifteens who entered for this years Southern Championships held at Parkstone Yacht Club over the weekend of 10 - 11 May 2003.

The impressive entry list included six former World & National Champions, plus a strong contingent from who are to host this years World Championships in August.

Under Race Officer Nick Stone the first race got away cleanly. Sean Craig from Ireland's Royal Saint George Yacht Club crewed by Stephen Boyle, starting from the pin end of the line led the fleet to the windward mark closely followed by reigning National Champions Steve Goacher and Phil Evans. Just behind them John Lavery, also from Ireland, was locked in a dual with Alan Bax crewed by Paul Busby, along with Rupert Mander and his front man Chris Hewkin. Sean Craig made the most of the strong wind to cross the finish line ahead of Steve Goacher with Bax and Busby third then Mander just ahead of Lavery.

For Race 2 with wind moving further to the south and the tide in flood competitors had some tough tactical decisions to make. Once again Sean Craig and Stephen Boyle led the fleet from the pin end and were first to round the windward mark. However Steve Goacher was close behind and moved ahead on an awsome three sail reach. Just behind him Greg Wells and Milo Mitchell from Hayling Island fought to hold off Alan Bax and Matt Flint sailing with Andy Thompson from Nothampton Sailing Club. Goacher took the gun just ahead of Sean Craig with Greg Wells next leading Alan Bax then Matt Flint.

The race officer shortened the length of the beat Race 3 but it was no less testing as the sea chop had increased with the incoming tide. Once again Craig and Goacher battled it out for line honours with Goacher adding a second win by crossing the line just three boat lengths ahead of Craig. In third place was Rupert Mander just ahead of Alan Bax in fourth and Charles and David Apthorp from Hayling Island in fifth place.

By Day 2 the wind had dropped to a force 3 - 4 and moved slightly south east. Race Officer Nick Stone shortened the start line and Race 4 was immediately recalled. The black flag was then brought out with good effect. The committee boat end was favoured with boats quickly tacking onto port tack. Leading the fleet in the lighter conditions were Peter and Sue Bannister from Hayling Island with their clubmates Charles and David Apthorp just behind them. Behind them Sean Craig notched up a third place while his arch rival Steve Goacher dropped to fifteenth. Alan Bax came in fourth with Adrian Tattersall crewed by Tim Smart from Bala SC in fifth place.

The final race was dismal, the wind veered, dropped, veered again and the odd shower made the conditions very uncomfortable. Once again the committee boat end of the line was favoured, but the fresher breeze was to be found further out. Matt Flint and Andy Thompson made all the right ecisions although they had to fight a hard battle with Andy Bax, as well as Charles Apthorp and Brett and Ben Dingwall from Grafham Water. At the finish Matt Flint crossed first, with Alan Bax just behind. Brett and Ben Dingwall were third and John Lavery fourth followed closely by Charles Apthorp.

After five gruelling, but excellent races Sean Craig and Stephen Boyle took the Southern Championship Trophy across the water to Ireland. Steve Goacher who last week won the Northern Championships came in second and Alan Bax and Paul Busby third. The first Silver Fleet boat (sail numbers under 3200) was Brian Campbell-Bottoms and Alan Harley from Hayling Island while the first Classic Flying Fifteen (under 2700) was Jeremy Arnold and Mike Pearce from Notts County SC. Leading a strong entry from the home club, Parkstone YC, was Paul Wills and Tony Bedingfield while the first Lady Helm was Gill Browning of Hayling Island.

Broxbourne Flying Fifteen Classic Open

17th May

A force 3 to 4 southerly with some stronger gusts greeted the twelve flying fifteens with sail numbers under 2700 for this event on the Classic flying fifteen circuit. After craning in, race officer Roger Wollin and his team soon had the first race underway. Jeremy Arnold sailing this weekend with Dave Brown soon demonstrated their superior spinnaker handling on the long planing 3 sail reach down the lake and pulled through to an easy win.

A course change giving two beats linked by broad reaches / runs made race two much closer. Newcomer to the class, Bob Falconer, fought it out with Jeremy Arnold with Neil Bartholomey and Geoff Town close behind. The lead changed several times and Bob appeared to be set for first, then his spinnaker halyard jammed and two boats went past including Jeremy for another win.

Neil Bartholomey initially led race three, however Jeremy and Dave worked their way through the fleet for yet another win and the trophy followed closely by Graham Lamond who took the prize for the first vintage boat. After racing, all the crews enjoyed barbecued steaks to make a pleasant end to a hard and enjoyable day.

Llangorse Sailing Club Flying Fifteen Open Meeting

17th and 18th May

We had some really exciting sailing over the week-end of 17th and 18th May at Llangorse. A total of 20 Flying Fifteens took part, with 4 gold boats, 4 silver boats and 12 classic boats.

There were a total of 9 visitors, consisting of 8 classics and 1 silver boat.

There were 2 separate starts: one for the Gold and Silver boats the other for the Classic boats. A series of 2 “back to back” races on Saturday PM and 2 more on Sunday AM.

The weather for both days was squally with showers of heavy rain and strong wind that varied in both direction and speed. On the Sunday the highest gust recorded was 34Knots. This resulted in some very interesting sailing varying between total “all-out” planes to pure survival and resulted in several fairly dramatic broaches including a total immersion for (appropriately) “Squall” - Stuart and Jennifer Jones boat

Overall Winners:

SILVERRichard TaylorEddie RamsdenMal JonesMal JonesRichard Taylor
CLASSICStuart JonesDavid DukeJohn WashingtonDavid DownsDavid Duke

Saturday racing:

The Gold fleet turned into a very close battle between 2 local boats Colin Fletcher 3429 & Nick Taylor 3575 with the lead changing 4 times in the 2nd race. Eventually Colin was the winner of both races on Saturday.
The first race of the Silver fleet was won by Richard Taylor 2931 and the second by Eddie Ramsden in a borrowed Llangorse boat 2863.
The Classic races were very closely contested with the leading 6 boats staying in close company.
The winner of the first race was Stuart & Jennifer Jones 1155 from Cardiff closely followed by Nick Heath 2520 with Peter Hogg 759 coming in third. The second race was won by David and Carole Duke 2646 after establishing an early lead and managed to hang-on with Nick Heath gaining fast. Nick gained another 2nd and Peter another 3rd.

Sunday Racing:

Nick Taylor in the Gold fleet pulled the stops out and won the 3rd race. The 4th race was a “sail-over” when Colin had to retire because of gear failure and the 2 other gold boats had chosen not to go out. Based on best results for the week-end gave Nick the overall 1st position.
In the Silver fleet the helm of 2863 changed to Mal Jones, who won both races but Richard Taylor’s consistent performance during the week-end (and his 1st on Saturday) gave him an overall 1st position.
The 3rd race of the Classic series resulted in a 1st by Simon Dangerfield and John Washington 798 after they had affected a repair of the superbly renovated wooden boat after an unfortunate coming together with 3751 during the 1st race. The last race was won by David Downs sailing 759 with his wife after Peter Hogg unfortunately, had to leave on Saturday.
There was a different 1st for each of the classic races with equal points (on discards) shared by the Dukes and Nick Heath / Ted Legg. The overall Classic winner was David and Carole Duke based on the results from all of the races.

Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club

24th - 25th May

Saturday 24th May saw good planing winds (15 - 20 mph) from the South West. Nine home boats and two visitors attended the meeting that was sponsored by Mills Garage, Volvo North East.

Race 1 saw the boats that headed for the south shore in a strong position, with Simon Robinson, crewed by Steve Turley (3737) just sneak ahead of Dave & Sue Giles (3612) on the windward mark, with John & Sylvia Hull (3611) also well placed also. Neil Platt & Andy Weatherspoon (3770) were some distance behind the leaders at this stage. The pattern was now set for the race, with the Robinson boat building up a good lead off the wind only to be closed right back by Giles & Platt up each beat. On the final lap, both managed to overtake Robinson upwind, and there was a real three way dog fight down the reaches and short beat to the finish, with the Giles first, Platt second and Robinson third.

Race 2 was sailed in very similar conditions, but this time Platt & Weatherspoon went the right side of the first beat, and were never headed, wining by a convincing margin. Giles Passmore crewed by Steve Graham (3139) were right up there in the first beat, and Athol King and Jane Bellis (3420) showed excellent upwind speed to come through into a clear second place by the first mark. Spinnaker problems on the next reach let through Robinson & Turley, and later the Giles (Dave & Sue), and that order remained unchanged to the finish.

Race 3 - Sunday was sailed in lighter and more variable winds from the North West. The Hull team got away fast at the start, and held the lead for a while, as did King & Bellis a bit later. Getting a shift right could make 100 yds in seconds (or lose it!), and in the end Platt & Weatherspoon worked their way into the lead, followed by Robinson & Turley, with the Giles third. Giles Passmore beat many a newer boat into 4th place.

Race 4 was also sailed in variable winds (both in direction and strength), and the impressive Platt / Weatherspoon combination showed their class here to win again by a good margin. Many boats held second place at one time or another, with the wind coming and going, but the Hulls sailed particularly well down one of the reaches to take good second, and the Giles just caught the Robinson / Turley boat on the finish line for third.

Race 5 started in very light and variable winds, but yet again Platt & Weatherspoon lead from start to finish, with the Giles second, closely pressed in this race by the improving Chris Whinn & John Boyd (3634) all the way round the course. The consistent King / Bellis combination were yet again 4th.

Race 6 - in a more steady force 2, and with Platt staying on shore having already won, the Giles lead from start to finish building up a large lead, but the places behind this changing quite a bit. In the end, the Whinn / Boyd combo were a good second, with King & Bellis third.

This left Platt & Wetherspoon clear winners, with Dave & Sue Giles second, and Robinson & Turley third. Giles Passmore & Steve Graham were deserved winners of the "Off the pace" fleet, and Jonathan Alldis & Hilary Talbot winners of the "Classic" Fleet. A particular thanks go to the Race officer Dave Darling and team for excellent courses in tricky conditions.

Bassenthwaite Open

31st May - 1st June

On Saturday, the hot sunny weather with a good southerly breeze to boot was looking extremely promising. The OD, who vowed to start on time, had to delay matters when the effects of a sea breeze started to put his plans for a course, taking the fleet around the lake, to pot. After this delay in setting a course to suit the new wind, the fleet were so eager to get down to it that there was a general recall. Fortunately, they behaved themselves after that and got off to a clean start second time around.

However, the winds had not settled down; with continual wind changes and the odd hole to contend with positions were regularly changing. Steve Goacher and Neil Platt enjoyed some good racing, but it was Neil that went on to win the first race.

The second race was held in more constant airs, and there were several battles going on throughout the race. Neil Platt again secured the lead and went on to win.

Saturday evening started with lasagne and chianti, and as the Stella started to flow a pool competition got underway. It's anyone's guess as to who (should have) won, but after several more Stellas very few people cared! Did this affect concentration levels for Sunday's racing...?

Sunday threatened to be a bit of a drifter, but just before the scheduled 10.30 start the wind started to fill in from the South and the racing was under way just 15 minutes late. The lead was again a battle between Steve Goacher and Neil Platt with Steve taking command of the situation, but Neil stole his chance on the final mark rounding to take the third race and secure the series. This didn't stop the two taking to the water for the final race. The wind had faded over lunchtime and it was hoped that a sea breeze would take over. However, although the wind filled in from the West with the sea breeze, northerly gusts of wind gave the starboard side of the beat the advantage. Steve Goacher was quick to notice this and soon had a commanding lead. The northerly gusts played their part in reducing Steve's lead on the next beat, but he stayed ahead and didn't make the same mistake again and he went on to win the final race.

Other prizes for the weekend went to that silvery haired Neil Currie with Toggle Cowan for their 'outstanding' performance in the Neil's former F15 in the silver fleet. The Classic boat prize went to Keith Jamieson.

Classic Fleet report

Saturday saw bright sunshine and a pleasant breeze as the fleet, with visitors from Cornwall, Kent and the Midlands, rigged and launched in readiness for the 1 PM start.

After a short delay due to the shifting winds, Race Office Ralph Singleton got the fleet away at the first attempt. Sailing a a F2/3 with occasional stronger gusts, Cadwallader and Simpson in 3679 played the shifts well to round the weather mark first, with Rupert Mander crewed by Dan Schnurr in 3779 second. This proved to be the finishing order, with Doug and Gail Pattison in 3190 third.

Race two was sailed in similar conditions to race one, and again Cadwallader lead Mander round the weather mark, however problems with spinnaker sheets allowed Mander and Peter Henney / Alan Rorke in 3583 through, this being the finishing order.

At the end of Saturday, Mander had a one point lead over Cadwallader, with Pattison 3 points further back. Many of the competitors adjourned to a local hostelry for an enjoyable evening meal.

Sunday Morning saw more wind and less sunshine. Race three had a clean start, and again Cadwallader lead Mander (now with regular crew Chris Hewkin) to the weather mark. Cadwallader suffered a jammed mainsheet at the top mark, allowing Mander to take the lead. The first two positions remained the same to the finish, with Henney taking third place.

The final race saw individual recalls and a change in the race order, with Mander leading at the first mark and Noel West / Amanda Conrad second and Keith Harris / Jeremy Fisher third. Mander revelled in the threshening breeze to pull away from the fleet leaving much place swapping going on further back. Cadwallader put on a late charge to pull through to second, with Henney coming in third. However on coming ashore it turned out that Cadwallader was amongst those who had jumped the gun.

Classic Report

A pleasant South Westerly 2-3 greeted competitors to the Chew Valley Lake Open & Classic, on Saturday morning. The first race was postponed for a short time as the wind would not settle, but got under way at the first time of asking about fifteen minutes late. Stuart Jones & Stuart Budden in 1155 led up the first beat followed by Peter Hogg & David Downs in 759. The wind did not settle throughout the race varying in both strength & direction but Peter Hogg made the best of the second beat and held on to finish ahead of Stuart Jones and David & Carol Duke in 2646.

Whilst the wind strengthened for the second race, it backed just after the start and made the beat a bit one sided. Stuart Jones lead all the way from start to finish followed by Peter Hogg & David & Carol Duke who just held off John Washington & Simon Dangerfield in 798 to take third place.

After a slightly raucous evening in a local pub, the competitors turned up on Sunday morning to find a considerable wind increase which seemed to suit John Washington best. Stuart Jones rounded the windward mark just ahead of John Washington and a close fought battle ensued down the reaches and back up the next beat. Washington rounded first and held the lead from there to the finish. Stuart Jones was second and David & Carol Duke third.

The final race saw a further increase in the wind strength and nothing between the top four places. John Washington arrived at the top mark first, followed by Stuart Jones again and another battle down the reaches and back up the beat took place. Washington rounded in front, hoisted the kite and prayed as a very large black cloud arrived together with thirty knots of breeze and a downpour. Visibility dropped and for a while it was a case of just getting round the course. Eventually the visibility returned and Washington had a big lead over Jones in second and Hugh Whatley & Shaun Greives in third. Unfortunately David Flint in 2587 lost his mast in the mayhem, but it was an exciting race to finish off the event.

Hayling Island Sailing Club

21st - 22nd June

Hayling Island's Flying Fifteen Open meeting for the Bulwark Trophy traditionally draws a big turnout of visitors keen to race against the strong home fleet at one of the few sea venues in the calendar. This year was no exception and with the World Championships only a month away in Ireland there were 18 visitors who had travelled from as far afield as Windermere, Lowestoft and Dublin for the event over the 21st/22nd June. Two races were held on the Saturday in brilliant sunshine and 8-12 knots of breeze and honours were shared between Rupert Mander sailing with Chris Hewkin and Barry and Sue Parkin who both had a first and a second. Behind them Steve Goacher/Phil Evans with a 3,4 and Charles and David Apthorp with a 4,3 kept close with Roger & Barbara Palmer and Alan Bax/Paul Busby just further back.

Sunday saw a change of conditions with overcast skies and a wind that built to 20 knots for the start of the third race. Goacher and Evans took an early lead that they held onto throughout pursued by Mander/Hewkin and John Lavery and David O'Brien from the National Yacht Club in Dublin Bay. The wind then disappeared and then reappered from a number of different directions and despite four or five start attempts the wind would not play ball and race officer Ian Porter eventually abandoned the last race. This left a tie for first place that was then broken in favour of Mander and Hewkin through their better result in the last race.

Overall a great weekend with both light and windy races superbly hosted by Hayling Island from their new clubhouse.

Cardiff Classic

28/29th June 2003

17 boats competed for the Dragon Trophy at Cardiff Bay Yacht Club’s annual classic flying fifteen regatta. With many crews warming up for the Worlds, racing was close and competitive throughout the whole weekend.

Saturday saw F 1-2 light airs and challenging shifty conditions. In race 1 local crew Stuart Jones and Nathan Cummins (ff1155) took a good shift up the first beat and held the lead throughout. Simon Dangerfield and John Washington (ff798) were second and Jeremy Arnold and David Brown, in the recently acquired French classic ff2684, third. In race 2 Dangerfield led throughout, followed by Jones. Mike Jones and Simon Thomas (ff2645) finished in third. All competitors enjoyed a BBQ in the evening sunshine at the club following racing.

Sunday’s F3-4 forecast materialised with a more consistent wind and blue skies. With everything to play for the racing was even closer. In the top half of the fleet positions constantly changed in race 3 with Dangerfield and S Jones exchanging the lead almost each leg. With Nick Heath and Ted Legg (ff2520) and Peter Hogg and David Downs (ff759) also in the thick of the action the result wasn’t clear until the final triangle when Dangerfield claimed first with Arnold sailing into second and S Jones third. Everything was set up for a tense last race. Yet again positions changed frequently amongst the whole fleet. Finally S Jones pulled clear on the third beat and led to the finish. Arnold was second and Heath third.

Overall the trophy went to S Jones with Dangerfield second and Arnold third. Other notable performances came from Jeremy and Kath Soulsby who finished in ninth position in the oldest boat in the fleet (ff55), and Brian Marchant from Cardiff Bay who celebrated his 70th birthday on Saturday and finished a creditable eighth overall in ff2525.

The Flying Fifteen is a two handed keelboat sailed by members at both Parkstone Yacht Club and The Royal Motor Yacht Club in Poole as well as being well represented in many clubs around the U.K and in other countries as far afield as Australia and South Africa.

The Royal Motor Yacht Club welcomed 22 competitors to this their annual Flying Fifteen meeting which was contested by two separate groups, an Open group and a Classic group. over four races all raced within Poole Harbour.

The open group, having sail numbers above 3000, was won by Rupert Mander and Chris Hewkin from Draycote Water Sailing Club, followed by a popular husband and wife local team from Parkstone Yacht Club Andy and Carol Maskell, with third place taken by Simon Kneller and Andrew Palmer from Grafham Water Sailing Club.

The Classic group comprising boats with sail numbers below 2700 was won overall by another husband and wife team, David and Carol Duke from Grafham Water Sailing Club, with second place overall being taken by Jeremy Arnold and Mike Pearce from Notts County Sailing Club, with third place being taken by another visiting team Nick Heath and Ted Legg from Grafham Water Sailing Club.

Royal Motor Yacht club members sailing in the Classic group but with sail numbers between 2700 and 3000 took all three prizes for this category. Nick Cornish and Paul Litton were first of this group, with Eric Scobie and Russell Hammerton second and Paul Thompson and Wiz Ashton third.

A beautiful sunny day on Sunday saw all competitors in a fine state of relaxation for the prize giving with our visitors giving thanks to The Royal Motor Yacht Club for a well run event.

Aldeburgh Regatta

10-15 August

Over 250 boats entered the Aldeburgh Regatta this year, the Flying 15 sailors racing in their own Class in the mornings and joining the Fast Keelboat Handicap in the afternoons. The River Alde basked in sunshine all week, with Mediterranean conditions being enjoyed all week and the hottest day ever recorded in Britain being enjoyed by all as the cooling seabreeze kicked in each day. The winds remained on the light side for most of the racing, but there was always enough to enjoy some competitive sailing, and by the end of the week the boats were enjoying planing conditions.

A brand new Phil Evans Special was launched at the beginning of the week, and proud owner David Andren was still taking the elastic bands and plastic bags off the boat as the warning signal for the first race approached ! The light winds kept the fleet close together for most races and some very tactical battles ensued. Jock Mawson crewed by Katherine Newman were the favourites to win the week, but found it difficult to break away from the main fleet off the start lines. Paul Botterill, Aldeburgh Yacht Club's Vice Commodore proved as elusive as ever around the race track, but a dismasting halfway through the week made it difficult for him to recover his overall result because he had to take average points on a day when he was Race Officer. Toby Courlander and Mike Turnbull arrived for the Week with sails adorned with their sponsors logos, these looked very impressive for the spectators, but may have been a distraction for the crew as Forza Azzura did not complete the week as well as they might have hoped for.

Sarah and Simon Davies Icy Calm fought hard all week with Robert and Tanya Ritchie in Mr Toad. Sarah showed great light wind skills to win race 4 which made up for some earlier disappointments in the week. Robert used his experience from his days as the Junior Lapwing Champion at Aldeburgh to maximum effect finding some extremely beneficial tidal advantages at certain times during the week. However, it was Ben and Sarah Nicholls in Bertie Woosterwho proved hard to beat and ended the week discarding a second place to leave them counting 1sts in every race to retain the Ratcliff Trophy.

Julian Roney Ffortune and John Alderson Saffron lead the battle for the Silver Fleet, with Charles McDowell and Mark Edworthy sailing Its Magic hot on their heels. Julian won the TOFT Trophy at the end of the week after a fine display on Orford Day beating many of the newer Flying 15s around the course.

Jock Mawson found his form in the afternoon Keelboat Handicap, sailing with his son Sebastian, he beat a fleet made up of Flying 15s, Dragons and RS K6s in convincing style. Aldeburgh Regatta would not be complete without its fair share of parties and the Flying 15 Dinner towards the end of the week lived up to its reputation. Many a sore head was seen floating around the dinghy park before the last race! Simon Davies takes over from Ben Nicholls as Fleet Captain with effect from the end of the Regatta and we all look forward to seeing visiting Flying 15s at Aldeburgh next year.

Falmouth Week

10 - 15th August

This year’s attendance of 20 boats was well down on the numbers of the last few years partly as a reaction to the poor race management last year. Chew Valley the stalwarts of Falmouth Week were represented by only three boats this year. However the Port of Falmouth Sailing Association appears to have taken note of our criticisms and the standard of organisation and race management was much improved. The courses set reflected the actual wind direction and the races were no longer than 21/2 hours in length.

As usual the week consisted of very varied sailing ranging from light winds to a good F4, from flat seas to choppy swell, from gusting North westerlies to south easterlies.

The first day of racing was hosted by the Helford River SC, involving a passage of about 6 miles to the start line. Due to lively winds, 3-4 North Westerly, predicted to increase during the day, some helms made a wise decision to have a lie in. Those who persevered had a good race but then had to contend with a long beat against heavy swell on the way back to Falmouth. Ian Cadwallader 3679 posted his first win with Simon Kneller 3699 in second place.
The wind strengths of Sunday carried over to Monday for the Mylor SC race. With Cadwallader and Kneller resuming their rivalry with the same result. In both cases Doug and Gail Pattison in Chiffon 3190 followed them home in third place.

The wind dropped away totally on Tuesday morning when the Restronguet race team made a sound decision to delay the start for an hour and right on cue a steady 2-3 North easterly came in and allowed a good course to be set. The majority of the fleet tacked up the shore in the dying breeze to keep out of the incoming tide only to find that the two boats who gambled on the stronger wind in mid channel sailed right through to take line honours on a shortened course. Tony and Brenda Lee in 3695 took first place well deserved as they had been in the first three for the whole race.

The lighter winds continued on Wednesday for the Flushing race. Noel West, Bewl Valley, rounded the windward mark first and whilst he reached to the second mark the rest of the fleet struggling against the tide to round the windward mark then found themselves on a beat to the same mark. Noel West pulled further away to a comprehensive first place sailing in totally different conditions from the rest of the fleet.
The St Mawes race the following day saw a reversal of the course with winds now turning to the South East, force 2-3. The front runners had a difficult time trying to locate some of the marks on a very complicated second lap which took the fleet round most of the marks and into St Mawes‘Bay. David and Carole Duke in their brand new boat 3794 eventually passed Judy and Bill Walker, Bewl Valley, 3726 and then held off a strong challenge from Ian Cadwallader 3679 with the lead changing at almost every mark on the last lap.

On Friday the wind picked up again, force 3/4 South Easterly with a big swell especially around Black Rock buoy. Once again the Committee sent us around the whole sailing area on an excellent course but with very gusty and tricky winds causing more than one broach amongst the fleet. This time Simon Kneller gained his revenge on Ian Cadwallader with David Duke coming in third.
Falmouth Regatta Week consists of racing from Sunday to Friday. Falmouth Town Regatta’s Saturday race is a stand alone event. Those not packing to return home had a final exhilarating race with lively wind strengths and a very long course once again covering most of the Carrick Roads.

The clear winner of Falmouth Week was Ian Cadwallader Chew Valley 3679 with 9 points. Second with 17 points with a very consistent performance were Doug and Gail Pattison of Chew Valley who won the husband and wife trophy for the Fifteen Class despite Doug going for an involuntary swim after a similarly involuntary gybe on Friday!!

In third place with 19 points justifying the purchase of a new boat were David and Carole Duke of Grafham 3794.

Only 2 Classic boats entered this year and the Classic Champagne Cooler was won by George Rock Evans 2562 of Royal Torbay who finished in a very creditable 11th place.

Despite a reduced entry we had a great week with varied conditions which resulted in generally good and highly competitive racing throughout the fleet. We also met up for an excellent meal in the Waterside Bistro organised by Amanda Conrad.
To all those regulars who did not come this year – you missed an excellent week and we hope to see you back next year.
To those of you who haven’t yet been to Falmouth Week, come and join us. The emphasis is on family sailing which although competitive is fun and friendly. There are also plenty of activities to satisfy the non sailors, young and old.

MIDDLE NENE CLASSIC

11th & 12th October 2003

A fleet of 22 boats took part including 8 visitors. The first race on Saturday started at 13.00 hrs. in a light westerly wind swinging between S.W. and N.W. David and Jan Marks from the home club in 2502 Whicheffer got away well and were never challenged to win from Fettercairn No. 517 Graham Lamond and Scott Train, with 2523 Bob Falconer and Rosie Winckle third.

After several attempts to set a line, and in a failing wind, the second race of the afternoon was abandoned – considered by all a good decision!

On Sunday morning with increasing wind strength correctly predicted, in the first race local boat 2488, Neil Bartholomey and Steve Brown broke clear followed by 1333 Peter Clark and Chris Tompson. Finally it was line honours for 2488 with Roger Finch and Jim Reid second and Bob Falconer and Rosie Winckle third.

By midday the wind strength had now increased providing planing spinnaker reaches with a gybe at the leeward mark. After three laps 2646 Mike Seville and Tony Watts lost what had been a clear lead. John Washington and Simon Dangerfield were home first followed Bob Falconer and Rosie Winckle and then Graham Lamond and Scott Train.

In the fourth race Jeremy Arnold and David Brown 2684 won with John Washington and Simon Dangerfield second and Roger Finch and Jim Reid third.

In the “novelty” race for Crews helming and Helms wrestling with spinnakers, Simon Dangerfield and John Washington 798 beat Scott Train 617 crewed by Graham Lamond.

The final results are attached. Only 2 points separated the first 5 places.

We (MNSC) hope the visitors enjoyed their weekend on and off the water. Most, as they left, said they would come back next year!
