MIDDLE NENE SAILING CLUB - MAXWELL TROPHY
November 4-5 2006 Click here for full details

Please note that this event has been CANCELLED due to weed problems.

Originally, that is in 1950, The Maxwell Challenge Cup was presented to the (then) Middle Nene Cruising Club by Rear Admiral Sir Wellwood Maxwell K.B.E. The club was founded in 1946, Sir Wellwood Maxwell was an early supporter of our sailing activities and he became our first Commodore and then President from 1954 to 1965.

Initially, the Maxwell Trophy was awarded annually, from 1950 through to 1961 as a regatta cup to the winning Nene One Design class. This class comprised five boats, all at Thrapston. The boat measured approximately eleven feet and was a Bermudan rigged sharpie, somewhat heavy by modern standards! It had been designed by David Boyd who later was responsible for the 12M Septre which contested the Americas Cup in the sixties. Unfortunately, neither the Nene One Design Class or any of our examples have survived. Subsequently, the Maxwell Trophy has been awarded as a Fireball regatta cup during the period when MNCC had a Fireball fleet.

Due to the historic significance of this trophy and its presenter to MNSC we intend to display The Maxwell Trophy permanently at Thrapston. We are delighted that BIFFA have accepted our offer that this trophy will be competed for annually by Classic Flying Fifteens at Thrapston.

A replica Maxwell Trophy has been commissioned to be awarded annually and retained by the winner until the next year’s event. Both the replica and original cups will be engraved with the winners' names.
