Flying Fifteen TNT Post Northern Travellers Series Final roundup

2009 was the third year of the TNT post north sponsored Travellers Series.  This comprised five events at Northampton, Bala, Burton, Notts County and Dovestone and is targeted at encouraging club sailors from these and other clubs to sample open meeting sailing and enjoy visiting other clubs.  The top 15 crews in the National rankings are excluded from results to give everyone a chance.  The results are compiled with separate rankings for the open fleet “modern”, silver fleet and classic fleet for boats under sail number 2700.

This season 54 boats took part in the five events, there were 11 qualifiers and sailors from a total of 13 clubs were represented.  The series has proved a considerable success and it is noticeable that during the three years it has run attendance at the Travellers Series events has increased.  This year Northampton sailing club held their first open meeting for some years and this was well attended.  Each of the other events had strong attendances up from previous years.  The number of qualifiers was also up.

fleet rounding markThe final event at Dovestone sailing club on the 3 and 4 October proved to be an excellent climax to the series.  Saturday produced ferocious wind ranging from 30 knots to well over 50 knots, prudence prevailed and sailing was suspended for the day.  Competitors undertook a variety of activities including walks around the picturesque lake and in the surrounding Peak National Park, whilst others attended a premier league football match.  The Saturday evening social event included a superb three-course meal provided by members of the club and culminated in the 4th World Ice Cube Curling Championships, that, after a close run battle was won by the Flying Fifteen Silver Fleet who saw off a team of Scorpion Sailors in the final.

Sunday dawned with clear skies and sunshine and no wind looking as though both days of sailing might be lost, one with too much wind and the other with too little.  In the end the wind filled in time for three races to be sailed in a fluky force 2.  This produced good racing for the 21 boat entry and the result of the meeting was undecided until the last race.  First place went to David McKee and Chris Hewkin and second place to Andy Goddard and Mal Hartland, both boats from the open fleet.  Showing the strength of the silver fleet Les Mayrick and Lucy Clough produced an outstanding performance to come third overall and Colin Pierce and Mandy Thackray finished fourth overall.  The Classic section was won by Dave Naylor and Norman Christie.

The prizes for the open meeting were sponsored by Speed Sails.

The overall results for the Travellers Series therefore produced a close finish.  In the open fleet the event could have been won by either Andy Goddard/Mal Hartland or Chris Swallow/Matt Pallett.  In the end a strong performance by the Goddard/Hartland crew saw them take the Open Travellers Series.

The winner of the silver section was also undecided coming into the final event.  The teams of Scott Train/Graham Lamond and Colin Pierce/Mandy Thackray were close on points and the outcome would be decided at Dovestone.  In the event an outstanding performance from the local crew of Les Mayrick and Lucy Clough resulted in overall victory for the Travellers Series by Scott Train and Graham Lamond.

In the classic section the event had already been decided the previous week at Notts County with winners of the series Ian and Gavin Shaw.

swallow pierceThanks are extended to all competitors for attendance this year and helping to make it a successful and enjoyable Travellers Series.  The good news is that TNT post north have agreed to sponsor the series again in 2010.  It is expected that the programme and format will be similar to this year however details will be provided before the end of the year.

A final thank you to Chris Swallow for compiling the results and acting as publicity officer for the series and to Andy Goddard (TNT post north) for their support for the series which continues to move from strength to strength.fleet running

FF Southern Travellers’ Series

The former South-eastern Travellers’ Series re-created this year. The original series was instigated by Brian Turner of Broxbourne SC, and was very helpful in setting up the 2009 programme. In all 6 clubs agreed to incorporate their existing inland Open Meetings into the series. The aim is to encourage club sailors, who tend to sail their own Open only, to feel welcomed and encouraged to travel to other similar local events. To aid this attractiveness, none of the 15 Worlds qualified Open sailors are eligible for the Open section. 2009 was set up as a re-establishing year, and started at Datchet and Bewl in March, then Llangorse in May, Cardiff (Classic and Silvers only) in June, Broxbourne in July and the final event in September at South Cerney.

The Open section was very well attended at Datchet with 16 qualified, and Bewl with 18, but proved to be a false dawn, with only 4 at Llangorse, 2 at Broxbourne and 1 at South Cerney. Ultimately only two raced at both of the first two, but no-one raced at three – the stipulation of the series was that you count your best three results, but have to attend 2 to qualify. Chris Swallow and Matt Pallet, and Mike Kilbee and Patrick Keats who were second. Well done to series leader.

The Silver section came down to a duel between two Datchet boats, Mike Firth and Phil Tinsley in 3385 won the last event at South Cerney to clinch the series, with Andy Clark and Nadia Melinkova in 3378 second overall. Two South Cerney boats raced two events, Andrew McArthur and Roderick Aitken in 3330 and Alex and Mike Tatlow in 3288.

The Classic section was the best attended overall, and it came down to the final event. John Craddock and Paul Kendal from Llangorse had a purple day at South Cerney, scoring 2,1,1,1,2 to win, beating Bob Tait and Peter Comber from Broxbourne into second place. They ended up level on points, with the South Cerney result separating them. The only other crew with 3 results were Tony Oatley and Tim Greaves from South Cerney. 6 boats recorded 2 results each. Well done all.

Plans for 2010 This year, we based the Series on the existing opens provided by the 6 clubs. Datchet and Bewl were in March – too early and too close together – we need one a month. We await the date for the Bewl open next year and then we can hold one at Datchet in an empty month to provide a better balance.

We will also promulgate earlier and more widely – in the BIFFA website if it is fully operating and via Yahoo Groups as well as via Fleet Captains. As soon as we have the dates for next year ……..

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

The Race Organisers shall not be liable for any loss, damage, death or personal injury howsoever caused to the owner/competitor, his skipper or crew as a result of their taking part in the race or races. Moreover every competitor warrants the suitability of his boat for the race or races. A boat is entirely responsible for its own safety, whether afloat or ashore, and nothing, whether in the Notice of Race or Sailing Instructions or anywhere else, reduces this responsibility. It is for the boat to decide whether it is fit to sail in the conditions in which it will find itself. By launching or going to sea, the boat confirms that it is fit for those conditions and that its crew is competent to sail and compete in them. The boat is required to hold adequate insurance and in particular to hold insurance against third party claims in the sum of at least £2m.

Nothing done by the organisers can reduce the responsibility of the boat nor will it make the organisers responsible for any loss, damage, death or personal injury, however it may have occurred, as a result of the boat taking part in the racing.

The provision of patrol boats does not relieve the boat of its responsibilities.

Flying 15 Inland Championships Grafham Water 2009.          Click here for results

The British Isles Flying 15 Inland Championship was held at Grafham Water on the weekend of the 18th/19th April in gloriously sunny and breezy conditions. The Flying Fifteen Association was most grateful to the Grafham Club for agreeing to host the event at short notice when the pre-arranged venue became unavailable. The Race Officer Tom Smith provided first class race management using Olympic courses over the weekend.

Forty six boats entered the event from all over the UK, an excellent turnout for an event taking place in a non-qualifying year for the World Championship.

An impetuous fleet lined up for race one and almost inevitably a recall was necessary. The black flag was exhibited thereafter and the fleet were underway at the second attempt. The breeze remained fairly steady at around 20 knots but there were shifts enough to play and those who played them well gained substantially. Jeremy Davy and Simon Childs were first at the windward mark with a comfortable lead although by the next round it was a lot less comfortable with Steve Goacher and Phil Evans on their transom. Goacher and Evans duly powered through and went on to win by some margin. This outcome became something of a pattern as the weekend went on although race three produced a well deserved win for Mike Hart and Richard Rigg.

After three energetic races on Saturday some were hoping for an easier ride on the Sunday, the breeze stayed a northerly force 3-4, rather less gusty than the Saturday. Although the leading pack in both races tended to pull clear, there was very close racing in the main fleet with the somewhat inevitable ‘events’ at mark roundings. The three boat length rule was, perhaps, not yet familiar with some competitors!

Overall, this was a very enjoyable weekend’s racing. Steve Goacher and Phil Evans won four of the five races to win the Inland Championship for the third year in succession.

The event was sponsored by easy-Jet who generously donated two return tickets to anywhere on easyJet’s network of over 80 destinations and they were won in a draw by Richard Ledger, the Flying Fifteen website editor.
